The League of Arab States Mission to Washington, D.C. (LAS) welcomes you to join us for the 5th Annual Arab-American Day Evening Celebration and a Morning Forum discussion on “The Arab Woman: Enhancing Leadership & Resilience”, on Monday, December 5, 2016 at the United States Institute of Peace (2301 Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, D.C. 20037). The event will focus on Arab and Arab-American women and their accomplishments.

The Morning Forum will begin at 10:00 AM and will end at 3:15PM. Please note that the registration starts at 9:00 AM.

The Evening Celebration will begin with a cocktail reception in USIP’s Great Hall at 6:30 PM, followed by keynote remarks, live music from local Arab musicians, an art exhibition entitled “Women’s stories”, and a buffet dinner lasting until 9:30 PM.

Council of Arab Ambassadors Meeting with Ambassador Anne Patterson May 4,2016

The League of Arab States hosted the monthly Council of Arab Ambassadors in meeting on Wednesday May 4,2016 where they welcomed Ambassador Anne W. Patterson (Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs) of the U.S. State Department. The meeting was attended by the 22 Arab Ambassadors in Washington DC where Ambassador Patterson was invited to give a keynote address and discussed issues of mutual concerns to the United States and the Arab World.

His Excellency Ambassador Salah Sarhan, Chief Representative to the Arab League, praised Ambassador Patterson for her efforts to strengthen the mutual relations between the Department of State and the League of Arab State and expressed great interest to continue a successful collaboration in an attempt to foster the Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation which was signed between the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States and the U.S. Department of State on September 25,2012.

Constantine – “ALGERIA” – Capital of Arab Culture 2015

CONSTANTINE- Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal has started Thursday a visit to the province of Constantine (431-km east of Algiers), where he will preside over the official launch of Constantine, Capital of Arab Culture 2015″ event, on behalf of President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

During the visit, Sellal will also inaugurate various exhibitions, scheduled as part of the cultural event, as well as several cultural and tourism facilities.

The opening ceremony of “Constantine, Capital of Arab Culture 215” event will be attended by the secretary general of the Arab League, the Director General of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), as well as ministers and Arab figures of the world of culture.

The capital of Arab culture is an initiative taken by the Arab League as part of the Cultural Capitals Programme of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote and celebrate Arab culture and encourage cooperation in the Arab region.

White House Summit : Countering Violent Extremism

On February 18, 2015, around 60 Countries and International, Regional and Non Governmental Organizations participated in the White House Summit on Countering Violent Extremism “CVE”, which was held at the State Department , Washington, D.C. on February 19th, to highlight domestic and international efforts to prevent violent extremists and their supporters from radicalizing, recruiting, or inspiring individuals or groups in the United States and abroad to commit acts of violence, efforts made even more imperative in light of recent, tragic attacks in Ottawa, Sydney, Paris Syria, Iraq and Libya. This summit will build on the strategy the White House released in August of 2011, Empowering Local Partners to Prevent Violent Extremism in the United States, the first national strategy to prevent violent extremism domestically.

Arab League Secretary General Dr. Nabil Elaraby headed the delegation of the League of Arab States to the Summit and addressed the meeting with the Arab league vision. He also held meetings with the U.N. Secretary General Ban -Ki Moon and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry as well as other bilateral meetings on the margin of the 2 days summit.

Arab League participates at PASSPORT D.C.
“Around the World Embassy Tour” for the second year, May 2 , 2015

Thousands of visitors checked out the Arab League hall representing the 22 Arab Countries, member States, cultures and basic information as part of Open Embassy Day which is an event successfully organized by “CULTURE D.C.” for the eighth consecutive year.

Volunteers with traditional and folkloric costumes greeted the guests all day long showcasing the rich embroidery and textile of the Arab traditional dress and handicrafts as well.

Jordanian Oud player and composer Abdel-Wahhab el-Kayalli performed different original Arab masterpieces of traditional music from all parts of the Arab region.

Moroccan Singers and folk dancers highlighted the festival with Cheer and happiness.

Posters and Banners explaining the culture and basic info on every Arab Country decorated the Hall , with kind participation from Oman Culture Center in DC, Hands along the Nile, Egyptian Culture and Educational office in DC, Qatar Foundation International, United for Palestinian Appeal, DC Arabian Sights Film Festival, Muslim Women Association, The Arab-American Historical Foundation, Arab-American Almanac, Washington Report, together with active participation from Lebanon , Sudan, Emirates, Egypt, Kuwait, Bahrain.. and most of the Arab Embassies in Washington D.C.

Great Participation from Libya (see photo of Libyan folk dresses) and Morocco in Separate booths at Embassy Row Hotel complemented the Exhibition of Arab Culture in the event.
